I tried a few things to make it work, and after a few more failures, I reinstalled Windows 8.1 Update, as a clean install. When installing the IDT audio driver, it said that it doesn't recognize the hardware. This would mean reinstalling drivers, and desktop apps.

However, back to the real problem, I've successfully used the driver from the same link at least 2 timesВ on the sameВ Windows 8.1 Update 1.В This month, I had to do a Refresh, soВ I did. As to the solution you proposed, I've already applied it before coming to this forum. I was referring to Windows 8.1 Update 1, sorry for creating confusion. I think this can damage the speakers if you use it above.Thank you for your answer. Already putting it to 10% the loudness is now as loud as before with maybe 80%.

Because the output is with these drivers way too loud. I also think the speaker output doesnt work correctly, and it uses the headphone amplifier for the speakers. It wont use the headset microphone just the internal mic. The only thing now not working anymore though is if you connect a headset to the XPS audio port. It now should look like this, drivers by MS:

chose Realtek, do the same as above and (if you dont do the above steps first, it wont work and also show not as compatible).

chose High Definition Audio-Controller.

chose change driver, local, show compatible.

locate Intel smart sound device under system devices.

I got it working, and I can confirm, the sound now sounds indeed dramatically better bouth over speakers and also headphones, no cracking so far. Github Kevin Schroff's Modded Realtek Driver:

It also removes the nagging pop-up asking what you plugged into the audio jack. This is the best driver to use if the Microsoft HD Audio driver gives you cracks/popping. Kevin Schroff modded the Realtek driver to completely remove the bundled 'Waves MaxxAudio software' - it's on the second link below. It can even blow your speakers (mine went twice already, replaced under warranty). There is no way to turn off the post processing that this driver does - and which mangles sound. The issue with the Realtek driver is the 'Waves MaxxAudio software' that comes bundled with it. The Microsoft High Definition Audio Driver does sound better though some get crackling and pops from it. There is a whole list of ways to enhance your XPS experience at the first link below. This is Realtek's download page for anyone asking: If this problem is as common as it seemed on the forums, I'm under the assumption not many people even realize they're using the generic audio driver rather than the HD counterpart that completely improves the sound. I hope this helps some people that have been experiencing what I have been for the last couple days. The key was clicking the HIGH DEFINITION option during STEP 7. I assume that was just the generic driver that came with the Realtek download.

I don't know how to explain it, but my audio was always just called 'Realtek (R)' in windows. The quality of my audio now compared to how it was before was night and day. Everything installed, I rebooted, fired up a Youtube music video, and OH MY GOD IT'S LIKE I GOT A COMPLETE AUDIO OVERHAUL. With Realtek's driver already installed, I followed these instructions, and made sure I picked the REALTEK HIGH DEFINITION (SST) driver. Two days pass and I tried again, but ran into this thread: There were pages and pages of people saying the 'fix' didn't work and/or they gave up and returned the XPS. However, reinstalling audio drivers with Realtek's files didn't fix anything.

In an attempt to remedy the situation, I visited several forums all suggesting to download and install Realtek's audio driver from their site and NOT from Dell's. Since then I've been experiencing occasional speaker crackling along with just very low-budget sounding audio in general. HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Okay, so a little context.
